LED lighting technology

An LED lamp is a type of solid state lighting (LED) that utilizes light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a source of illumination rather than electrical filaments or gas, which are also shock resistant.

Advantages of LED lighting technology: LED Lighting technology is ideally suited to solar powered lighting systems, as LEDs have low power consumption and can be customised to suit a low voltage DC power requirement. The lifetime of hi-powered LED lights for example is usually 8 to 10 years (30,000 to 50,000 hours), 3 to 8 times the life of traditional HID lighting technologies such as MH, HPS and MV. LEDs also have low maintenance cost and low heat output.

More accurate colour rendering: The colour rendering index is the ability of a light source to correctly reproduce the colours of the objects in comparison to an ideal light source. LED lighting technology is also instant start. Unlike HID lamps, which take time to heat up once switched on, LEDs turn on instantly, with no re-strike downtime, and are PIR sensor friendly.

RoHS compliance: LEDs don't contain heavy metals and don't emit poisonous gases. Less attractive to insects: Insects are sensitive to the UV- spectrum. Insects are attracted to the emission of UV light and heat from conventional HID light sources. LEDs, however, are low heat and emit no UV light, so insects are less attracted to this light source.

No waisted light: SP XD LED lighting systems have focussed lenses on the LED array, which is designed to focus its light in a designed beam pattern, an advantage compared to traditional HID street lights, which typically have a reflector on the back side of a lamp, this causes a high percentage of waisted light above the horizontal (Skywards) and this also produces light pollution in the air and surrounding environment, traditional HID lights can also cause glare for drivers, pedestrians and residential housing. By using LED lighting technology, power will be greatly reduced by 69% along with substantial maintenance costs.
